WELCOME TO KITCHENUHMAYKOOSIB
Kitchenuhmaykoosib has a population of around 1,200.
Around 30% of the band members live in urban areas.
A dozen or so treaty status natives from surrounding
communities also reside in KI (fluctuating numbers).
Also a dozen or so non-natives also reside year round
in KI employed at Nursing Station & local school.
KI is a member of Independent First Nations Alliance
with Lac Seul, Pikangikum, Muskrat & White Sands
First Nations.
Languages Spoken & Written: English & Obj-Cree.
Reserve Size: 29937.6 Hectres
(Approx. 299.4 square kilometers/115.6 square miles)
Reserve lands has never been increased even though
our population has doubled/tripled.
Back in the 60s, Kitchenuhmaykoosib used to be one big
nation which include present day Bands such as Wapekeka,
Wunnumin, Kingfisher, Sachigo, Bearskin & Kasabonika.
These six communities got their own Band Councils & reserve status in 1976.
Every two years for the past decade or so, the 6 communities come to Kitchenuhmaykoosib to celebrate the 4 day
KI Home
Coming.
Other First Nations such Fort Severn, Webequie, Muskrat
Dam, Keewaywin, Long Dog, Shamattawa from Manitoba,
Peewanuck from James Bay & Weagamow come to cel-
ebrate with us.
The KI Home Coming gives Band members who live in
urban towns come home for a few days & have a good
time with family members, relatives & friends.
Same wtih the seven other communities who used
to belong to Kitchenuhmaykoosib Nation.
The 2009 KI Homecoming was cancelled due to swine flu
pandemic. Next KI Homecoming is scheduled for August, 2011.
New Homecoming ground is being constructed at West Bay
Area for the 2011 Homecoming.
We like to invite non natives & other people who worked
here in Kitchenuhmaykoosib (Big Trout Lake) back in the
50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s to come and celebrate with us.
We would like to see you guys again.
Come on over and celebrate with us grand opening of the
new Homecoming Grounds at West Bay (Pointed Head)
